Who Can Invest in AIFs?
Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) are privately pooled investment vehicles that gather funds from investors to invest in assets beyond traditional options like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. They are primarily designed for High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs) seeking higher return potential, portfolio diversification, and professional fund management.
In India, AIFs are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and are categorized into three types based on their investment strategy and risk profile. Exit loads may apply depending on the scheme.
AIFs are open to:
- Resident Indians and NRIs
- A minimum investment of ₹1 crore (₹25 lakh for directors, employees, and fund managers)
- A maximum of 1,000 investors per scheme (angel funds are capped at 49 investors)
