Why Are Shares Held Under MTF Released?

A Margin Trading Facility (MTF) allows investors to purchase shares by availing funding from the broker. Shares purchased under MTF are generally held as collateral against the funded amount. However, under certain circumstances, these shares may be released from the MTF account and transferred to the client's beneficiary (Demat) account against the available funds in the normal ledger. The following are the key reasons for the release of shares held under MTF:

1. Change in Eligibility of the Security

Shares may be released if the security is no longer eligible under the MTF framework. This can happen when:

• The stock is moved out of the Group 1 category, or
• There is a change in its EQ series classification.

Since such securities may no longer qualify for funding under MTF, the shares are transferred to the beneficiary account against the available ledger balance.

2. No Outstanding MTF Loan or Debit Balance

If there is no outstanding MTF loan or debit balance in the MTF account, the funded position no longer requires collateral backing. In such cases, the shares held under MTF may be released and transferred to the client's beneficiary account.

3. Corporate Actions Affecting the Security

Certain corporate actions may necessitate the release of shares from MTF holdings. These include:

• Fractional entitlements arising from bonus issues or stock splits
• Delisting of the security
• Mergers or demergers

These events may impact the status or structure of the security, requiring the shares to be moved out of the MTF account.

4. Lack of Trading Activity

If the concerned ISIN has not been traded on the exchange during the last three trading days, the shares may be released from the MTF account and transferred to the beneficiary account, subject to the applicable funding and ledger conditions.
